Ban on Facebook and Twitter by India Government

Facebook Twitter Orkut BannedAug 22, 2012 : Twitter refused India Government’s directive to remove 6 accounts that mimic PMO (Prime Minister’s Office).

These parody Twitter accounts are like @PM0India (O replaced with a zero), @Indian_pm, @PMOIndiaa etc.

As Twitter is not complying, Indian Govt. has asked service providers to block these 6 accounts or pages.

Blocking accounts or pages on Twitter is very easy for India Government, through DNS server controlled by ISPs.

Feb 13, 2012 : Mr. Kapil Sibal ( Minister of Communication and IT)  says:

“ I want to say once and for all, without any obfuscation, no government in India will ever censor social media ”.

This statement seems like, he desperately wants to makeup his tarnished image in front of public. Few days back Mr. Sachin Pilot said that – Online social media websites like Facebook and Google must comply with the country’s law. Interestingly his statement came just one day after Facebook and Goole officials declares that they have already removed some objectionable and provocative content from their site after a Delhi court order.

Past Events : Real Political Drama

5th Dec 2011 : Telecom & IT minister of India Mr. Kapil Sibal called officials from Facebook, Twitter and Orkut at his office.
He told them how people are misusing Facebook, Twitter and Orkut by posting derogatory remarks and morphed photos about Indian politicians to tarnish their public image. Discussion continued for hours.

Outcome : Officials from Facebook, Twitter and Orkut didn’t agree to remove the profiles and fan-pages containing controversial contents if it doesn’t violate their policies.

6th Dec 2011 : Mr. Kapil Sibal arranged a press conference in his residence and announced ” BAN/Removal of profiles and fan-pages/communities on Facebook, Twitter and Orkut containing adverse/derogatory remarks and morphed photographs of politicians, government and individuals “. This step will be from Govt of India against the will of popular social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Orkut.

Insider Story : Recently the public image of Indian government was tarnished in social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Orkut by people of India on the wake of movement against corruption. People of India post abusive and controversial messages and morphed photographs of  The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, congress party president Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, IT minister Mr. Kapil Sibal and few other.

To protect the India Govt’s image for the current tenure and as a preparation for the next election, this step was taken by the IT minister.

Reactions from people of India : Facebook, Twitter and Orkut flooded with even more furious remarks about Mr. kapil Sibal and Govt. of India.

Chetan Bhagat( writer ) says – I hate some of the stuff written on the internet, but I would hate it even more if they were not allowed to write it. You can’t censor internet. You shouldn’t censor it.

Google says – But it also means that when content is legal but controversial we don’t remove it because people’s differing views should be respected, so long as they are legal.

Facebook says – We will remove any content that violates our terms, which are designed to keep material that is hateful, threatening, incites violence or nudity off the service.

Let’s wait and watch, what steps India Govt, I mean Mr. Kapil Sibal will take in near future. I will keep you updating about any developments regards this.
