Google rolled out a new algorithm change this week having impacts on search rankings.
If you have a medium to small website and experiencing a bump in traffic for last 2 days, then this algo change might be the most probable cause.
Due to this change, more and more diverse search results from more number of domains are appearing in SERPs. This news was confirmed by Matt Cutts, the head of Google’s web-spam team via a tweet on Sep 14.
Just fyi, we rolled out a small algo change this week that improves the diversity of search results in terms of different domains returned.

Panda update confusion: Lots of webmasters, whose sites were hit by previous Panda updates are experiencing huge improvements. Some are getting more than 50% traffic in last 2 days. And, they are attributing this change to Google Panda.
It’s a good news for new and upcoming sites, as well as existing medium to small websites. Because, lately, if you search for something in Google, more and more number of results were coming from the same domain. Sometimes all the results were dominated by a single domain only. And, webmasters were scared of Google’s search results can sometimes be dominated by established online brands only.
Now the playing field will be little bit leveled for both small and medium websites, and big brands.

Dear Nandita,
thanks for this clear and valuable article! Is there any info about the non-English written websites? When will this algorithm change take effect on them?
Regards from Budapest,

The sad reality is that, those Panda hit sites that experienced a traffic surge, are likely to drop back down in the search results, after the next panda refresh is run.
Reason being, is because the Panda algorithm is independent of the search engine and has to be rolled out separately, Matt Cutts was talking about them sometime in the future fully implemented it into the search engine, but for now, that’s what we have.

All the updates look at different aspects of your website, so which update affects your traffic? Is it Panda? Panda looks primarily at site architecture, whereas Penguin looks primarily at off site factors, i.e. backlinks.

During the last week I droped several positions in google results. I don’t if this is due to any google update or to changes made on the website. I have a small static website that was doing good in search results, but now I don´t know…
Pleased to know that now diversity would provide Google first page appearance to medium-small websites .
Yes, i didn’t expect that this was the change! My site has been experiencing over 500 page views a day though i didn’t post regularly from many days. I’m wonder stuck.
